CMCA® Examination

To obtain the CMCA certification, a candidate must demonstrate basic knowledge in many areas of community association management.

Exam Content

The CMCA Examination is a three-hour, 120-question multiple choice exam that tests candidates in:

  • Meetings
  • Governance and Legal Issues
  • Budgets, Reserves, Investments, and Assessments
  • Financial Controls
  • Risk Management and Insurance
  • Property Maintenance
  • Contracting
  • Human Resource Management

To help you prepare for the CMCA examination, we developed this study guide from a content outline that is the basis for the CMCA examination. This guide is intended to help you manage your preparation for the CMCA examination. It is important for you to become familiar with the content outline and the knowledge areas. The eight specific knowledge areas have been developed to assist you in studying and each area describes the responsibilities and associated tasks performed and the comprehension needed to successfully practice community association management.

Examination Formats and Fees

You can take the CMCA examination on the computer or with a paper and pencil.

Computer-based:

The computer-based examination offers a wide selection of dates and locations and provides test results instantly. Pearson VUE, a leading provider of computer-based licensure, certification and assessment examinations around the world, delivers the test.

Minimal computer experience is required. When you are ready to take the examination, test officials will put you at ease with step-by-step instructions.

Pearson VUE provides examination results immediately after you complete the examination. Results include feedback showing the approximate percentage of items answered correctly. Only pass/fail information is provided.

To take the CMCA examination via computer, please sign up for the examination by checking Computer-Based Format on the CMCA application. To find the location nearest you, visit http://pearsonvue.com/cmca/ and select "Locate a Test Center."

Paper-and-pencil:

The paper-and-pencil examination is offered in March and September. Find a testing site and date.

Candidates will receive paper-and-pencil test results four to six weeks after the examination. Results include a feedback sheet showing the approximate percentage of items answered correctly. Only pass/fail information is provided.

To take the CMCA examination via paper-and-pencil, please sign up for the examination by selecting paper-and-pencil on the CMCA application.

Fees:

Computer-based examination: $300
Paper-and-pencil examination: $350

Both fees include the application fee, examination, your first year of certification and weekly issues of Smartbrief, the CMCA e-newsletter.

Retaking the examination:

If you do not pass the examination, you can retake it during the next testing cycle. Candidates must complete and submit the retake application and submit the discounted fee. The discounted price for the retaking the examination is valid for five years.

Computer-based retake examination: $250
Paper-and-pencil retake examination: $300
